Bulk actions
Every table in Brick lets you mark several rows and act on them together: Contacts, Deals, Tasks, a list, and the Inbox. The Contacts and Deals boards work the same way.
Select rows with the checkbox or the keyboard#
Click the checkbox at the left of a row to select it. Click it again to deselect it. The checkbox in the table header takes every row on the page, and a second click on it clears them all.
To select from the keyboard, click a cell first so it has the blue focus ring, then hold Shift and press the up or down arrow. Each press extends the range by one row. Rows you selected before the range stay selected.
On a board, the checkbox appears when you hover a card. It stays visible once the card is selected. With a card focused, press x to select it, and x again to deselect it. A board has no ranges: Shift with an arrow does nothing there. On a board, Enter opens the card and Space peeks at it. Neither selects it.
A selection belongs to the page you are on. Brick never saves it, and moving to another page drops it.
Select everything with ⌘A#
Press ⌘A (Ctrl+A on Windows) to select every record loaded on the page. On Contacts, Deals, Tasks, a list, and both boards, that is every record that matches the view. Hover the header checkbox and the tooltip reminds you of the shortcut.
On a grouped table, such as Tasks, the shortcut also takes the rows inside collapsed groups. A collapsed group hides its rows, but the rows stay in the selection.
The shortcut only ever selects. Pressing it a second time does not clear the selection. It also does nothing while you are typing in a field or while a dialog is open. In those places, the browser's own select-all applies.
The Inbox loads its conversations a page at a time, so ⌘A there takes only what is loaded. See Inbox for the bar's Select all N conversations in this view option.
The bar at the bottom#
While anything is selected, a bar floats over the bottom of the page. It shows the count, what is selected, the actions you can take, and a ✕ to clear.
To clear the selection, press Esc or click the ✕. If a cell editor is open, the first Esc closes the editor and the next one clears the selection. A table and its board offer exactly the same actions.
Contacts: add to list, send email, delete#
Add to list opens Add N contacts to lists. Search with Search lists…, tick the lists you want, and press Save (or ⌘Enter). New list makes a list without leaving the dialog. Brick creates that list at once, but adds nothing to any list until you save. A contact already on a list stays as it is. You can add up to 500 contacts at a time. The bar only adds contacts to lists. To remove one, open the list itself.
Send email opens the composer with Mass sending on, so twelve selected people get twelve separate emails. Turn the switch off to send one email to all of them. A mass send takes up to 50 recipients. Select more and the composer keeps the first 50 and says how many it left out. If you have not connected Gmail yet, Brick asks you to first with Connect your Gmail to send email. See Sending email.
Delete asks you to confirm. See the last section.
Deals: add to list, move to stage, delete#
Add to list and Delete work as they do for contacts.
Move to stage opens a menu that names every stage in every pipeline, as the pipeline name followed by the stage name. Pick one and every selected deal moves there. The selection clears when the move is done. On the Deals board, this is the only way to move several cards at once: dragging a card moves that card alone, even when others are selected.
Tasks: complete, change due date, link records, delete#
Mark complete completes every selected task and clears the selection. When every selected task is already complete, the button reads Mark not complete and reopens them instead. A mixed selection completes them all.
Change due date opens Change due date for N tasks with a calendar. Pick a day, then press Update. The button stays disabled until you touch the calendar. Clear date counts as a touch: press Update after it and every selected task loses its due date.
Record links the selected tasks to contacts or deals. Add record keeps the records each task already has and adds the ones you pick. Replace record swaps them for the ones you pick. Each opens a dialog where you pick any number of records; the button at the bottom reads Add records or Replace records. In Replace record, unpick everything and press Replace records to clear every record from every selected task. Brick does not ask you to confirm this.
Delete asks you to confirm.
Inside a list: remove from list#
Open a list and the bar offers one action, Remove from list. Click it and the selected records leave the list at once, with no confirmation. Brick does not change the records themselves. A contact you remove from a list is still in your Contacts. See Lists.
What Delete asks#
Deleting contacts, deals, or tasks from the bar always opens a dialog first. The Inbox is the exception: its Delete acts at once. The dialog is named for what you are deleting, such as Delete contacts, and the red button repeats the count: Delete 3 contacts. Cancel has the focus when the dialog opens, so pressing Enter or Esc backs out.
Each dialog says what the delete takes with it:
- Contacts: the contacts are removed from your workspace, including from any deals and relationships.
- Deals: the deals are removed from your workspace. The dialog does not say it, but the contacts on them stay.
- Tasks: the tasks are removed along with their links to any contacts and deals.
You cannot undo any of these, so read the count before you click.
